Tips for Effectively Pruning Trees
We need to prune trees for a host of reasons. Branches which are dead, damaged and diseased should be removed to prevent insect and other harmful organisms from entering the tree. Pruning also helps maintain the appearance of trees. But to prune trees properly, you should know some important things. I spoke with tree removal company WNY Tree Services, and they gave me the following pruning tips:
Prune trees in the dormant season
The best time for pruning trees is the late fall. If you prune branches during this season, your tree will deal with less stress. During this time, your tree is less likely to get infected by fungus. Prune your tree after it has shed leaves. But do not wait for the dormant season if a branch gets damaged. Remove it as soon as possible.
Remove damaged branches first
Whatever the reason of the damage is, damaged branches should be removed as soon as possible. These branches still take some nutrients from the tree. If you remove these branches, healthy branches will get sufficient nutrients. Removing these branches is also aesthetically good for your tree.
Prune tender branches
It is not a good idea to prune old and aged branches. Rather, prune young branches. You will find it easier to prune young branches, and that will cause much less stress to the overall health of the tree. Pruning tender branches poses less threat to your tree. Pruning young branches also allows you to give the tree the shape you want.
Prune branches that cause obstructions
Some branches cause some problems such problems. They may be too close to your window, or they may block a narrow passage. Overgrown branches can also get too close to electric or telephone wires. Pruning these branches will not only remove these obstacles but also promote the health of your tree.
Do not prune too many branches
Although pruning is good for a tree, pruning can do some bad things if it is not done properly. Your tree becomes more likely to be infested by fungus and insects, for example. That is why you should prune only the branches which really need to be removed. A tree will become sick if it loses more than one-third of its branches. Prune your tree only once in a season. Frequent pruning can make a tree weak.
Clean your equipment
It is a good idea to make your shears pathogen-free before you use it to prune a tree. Pouring some rubber alcohol on the shears will do. If you do not clean your equipment properly, your tree may get some harmful germs.
Thin out thick areas
It is important to thin out areas that are thick with too many branches. It will make sure that your tree gets enough air and light. Good air circulation is necessary for healthy growth of your tree. Make the thick areas clutter-free.Read More →
